Nigeria Customs Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Illegal and Substandard Imports

Nigeria Customs Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Illegal and Substandard Imports

Major Seizures Worth Over ₦10 Billion

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has once again demonstrated its firm stance against illegal and substandard imports, announcing the interception of 16 containers of prohibited goods valued at more than ₦10 billion. The announcement came from the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, during a press briefing at the Apapa Area Command in Lagos on August 15, 2025.

Protecting Nigerians from Harmful Goods

The seized items included expired drugs, expired food items, used clothing, and arms and ammunition—all of which pose serious risks to public health and national security. Among the most alarming discoveries was a container initially cleared during inspection but later found, through intelligence-led operations, to conceal 202 cans of Colorado Loud (101kg), alongside firearms and ammunition. This highlights the growing sophistication of smuggling networks and the importance of vigilance by Nigerian clearing agents and enforcement bodies.

Inter-Agency Collaboration in Enforcement

The operation was supported by the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Their joint presence underscores the crucial role of collaboration in combating illegal imports. As CP Alamutu Abiodun (Rtd) of NCCSALW noted, the Customs’ success directly strengthens national security by reducing the inflow of dangerous weapons.

Implications for Imports and Exports in Nigeria

For legitimate traders, importers, and exporters, these seizures reaffirm the importance of compliance with Nigeria’s trade policies. By strictly enforcing import guidelines, the NCS is protecting the market for genuine businesses while curbing unfair competition from smugglers. Licensed clearing agents in Apapa Lagos and freight forwarding agents in Nigeria play a vital role in ensuring that goods and cargos are processed lawfully, helping to safeguard the supply chain and public trust.
