Nigeria-India Customs Partnership Boosts Trade Efficiency
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is taking bold steps to enhance Nigerian imports and exports through a strengthened partnership with India, as showcased at the 92nd World Customs Organisation (WCO) Policy Commission in Brussels on June 25, 2025.
Led by Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS engaged with India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to advance the Customs Mutual Administrative Agreement (CMAA) signed in November 2024. This collaboration signals faster, more transparent clearing of goods and cargos in Nigeria.
The bilateral talks focused on critical areas like customs valuation, combating transfer pricing, and integrating customs and tax systems. These efforts aim to streamline customs clearing processes and tackle revenue leakage, and ensuring smoother operations.
A key highlight was the joint success in seizing substandard pharmaceuticals, driven by enhanced intelligence sharing. This protects Nigeria’s markets and underscores the value of global cooperation for cargo services in Nigeria.
CGC Adeniyi noted, “Our partnership with India is transforming how we approach clearing cargos and ensuring compliance. From curbing undervaluation to improving system integration, we’re building a smarter customs framework.” This is great news for importers and exporters, as it promises reduced delays and enhanced supply chain security.
India’s representative, Mr. Surjit Bhujbal, emphasized Nigeria’s role as a key African partner, with plans for joint training and data-sharing to boost international freight forwarding.
