Nigeria’s E-Customs Modernisation Project: A Game-Changer for Imports and Exports in 2025

Nigeria’s E-Customs Modernisation Project: A Game-Changer for Imports and Exports in 2025

In 2025, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) is set to launch the $3.2 billion E-Customs Modernisation Project, digitizing cargo processing, surveillance, and payments across ports and borders.

This initiative aims to reduce clearing times for goods and cargos, with Apapa and Tin Can ports already seeing processing drop to 7–10 days for compliant importers. The National Single Window portal, another digital tool, consolidates processes from 15 government agencies, streamlining Nigerian imports and exports.

These advancements promise cost savings for businesses engaged in international freight forwarding. Importers and exporters must prepare for stricter compliance, as the NCS recovered ₦64 billion from under-assessed imports in 2024, signaling robust enforcement.

Nigerian clearing and forwarding agents play a vital role in navigating these systems. Accurate documentation, including Form M and PAAR, is critical to avoid delays when processing the customs clearing of their goods and cargos.

For exporters, fast-track lanes for agro-exports, introduced with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), enhance efficiency. Verify your clearing agent’s license and leverage digital platforms like the NCS portal to verify shipments tariff rates, exchange rate amongst others.
